لم يدر بخلد عالم الزلازل الأمريكي البارز يولين تشين أن بحوثه الدقيقة، التي تهدف إلى رصد الهزات الأرضية الناجمة عن التفجيرات النووية تحت الأرض، ستتحول إلى فخ سياسي يودي به خلف القضبان الصينية.

بعد عامين من الصمت والتكتم، كسرت عائلة العالم الأمريكي صمتها وأعلنت مفاجأة مدوية، كاشفة أن السلطات الصينية تحتجزه منذ نوفمبر 2024 بتهمة التجسس، دون أي مؤشر على قرب الإفراج عنه، مما حول قضيته الأكاديمية إلى أزمة دبلوماسية معقدة بين القوتين العظميين.

الفخ الخاطف: جرى اعتقال تشين فجأة في مطار بكين الدولي عقب زيارة عائلية عادية لوالديه في الصين، ومنذ تلك اللحظة انقطعت أخباره تماماً عن أسرته. العزلة التامة: حُرم العالم الأمريكي من مقابلة أي محامٍ طوال العام الأول من احتجازه، وخضع لأكثر من 100 جلسة استجواب مكثفة حول طبيعة أبحاثه وعلاقاته بجهات أمريكية. زيارات مقيدة: حتى اللقاءات النادرة التي أجراها مسؤولو السفارة الأمريكية معه، تمت تحت رقابة صارمة وبحضور مسؤولين صينيين، ما حال دون تمكنه من التحدث بحرية أو كشف تفاصيل معاناته.

ما علاقة تجارب كوريا الشمالية؟

تؤكد عائلة تشين أن أبحاثه كانت علنية وأكاديمية بالكامل، وهدفت بشكل أساسي إلى رصد وتتبع التجارب النووية لكوريا الشمالية باستخدام البيانات الزلزالية، وهي مشاريع حظيت بتمويل من وزارة الخارجية الأمريكية ومختبر أبحاث القوة الجوية الأمريكية.

لكن السؤال الذي يطرحه المحللون: لماذا تخشى بكين عالم زلازل؟

تشير التقارير الصادرة عن منظمة «Global Reach» إلى أن بكين قد تكون متخوفة من أن تقنيات تشين الدقيقة قادرة على رصد التوسع النووي السري للصين، وتحديداً المزاعم المتعلقة بإجراء بكين لتجربة نووية سرية تحت الأرض عام 2020، وهو ما تنفيه السلطات الصينية جملة وتفصيلاً.

وأخذت القضية طابعاً سياسياً حاداً بعد دخول الإدارة الأمريكية على خط الأزمة بشكل مباشر. وكشفت المنظمات المتابعة للملف أن الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب أثار قضية تشين شخصياً مع الرئيس الصيني شي جين بينغ خلال لقائهما في مايو الماضي، مطالباً بالإفراج الفوري عنه، لكن بكين لم تستجب للطلب حتى الآن.

وفي غضون ذلك، حذر السناتور الأمريكي إدوارد ماركي من أن هذا الاحتجاز «غير المشروع» يمثل ضربة قاضية لجهود التعاون الأكاديمي والبحثي المشترك بين واشنطن وبكين، بينما تصر وزارة الخارجية الصينية، على لسان متحدثها لين جيان، على أن القضية تُدار بالكامل وفقاً للقوانين المحلية، نافية وجود أي احتجاز تعسفي.

The sudden trap: Chen was abruptly arrested at Beijing International Airport following a routine family visit to his parents in China, and since that moment, all news about him has completely ceased for his family. Total isolation: The American scientist was denied the opportunity to meet with any lawyer throughout the first year of his detention and underwent more than 100 intensive interrogation sessions about the nature of his research and his relationships with American entities. Restricted visits: Even the rare meetings he had with American embassy officials were conducted under strict surveillance and in the presence of Chinese officials, preventing him from speaking freely or revealing details of his suffering.

What is the connection to North Korean experiments?

Chen's family asserts that his research was entirely public and academic, primarily aimed at monitoring and tracking North Korean nuclear tests using seismic data, projects that received funding from the U.S. State Department and the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory.

But the question analysts are asking is: Why is Beijing afraid of a seismologist?

Reports from the organization "Global Reach" indicate that Beijing may be concerned that Chen's precise techniques are capable of detecting China's secret nuclear expansion, specifically the allegations regarding Beijing conducting a secret underground nuclear test in 2020, which Chinese authorities categorically deny.

The case took on a sharp political tone after the U.S. administration directly intervened in the crisis. Monitoring organizations revealed that U.S. President Donald Trump personally raised Chen's case with Chinese President Xi Jinping during their meeting last May, demanding his immediate release, but Beijing has not responded to the request so far.

Meanwhile, U.S. Senator Edward Markey warned that this "illegal" detention represents a devastating blow to efforts for academic and research cooperation between Washington and Beijing, while the Chinese Foreign Ministry, through its spokesperson Lin Jian, insists that the case is being handled entirely according to local laws, denying any arbitrary detention.
