The US House of Representatives voted on Thursday in favor of a measure aimed at restricting President Donald Trump's powers to wage war on Iran without congressional approval, a step reflecting opposition within Congress to military operations, despite the White House and Republican leadership opposing the measure.

CNN reported that 4 Republican lawmakers joined Democrats in supporting the measure, introduced by Democratic Representative Pramila Jayapal, as it passed by a vote of 214 to 208, noting that the Republican lawmakers who voted for the resolution were Thomas Massie, Brian Fitzpatrick, Tom Barrett, and Warren Davidson.

Although the network described the House resolution as a 'political rebuke to Trump,' the measure will not compel the administration to end the war even if the Senate approves it, as concurrent resolutions, which are not sent to the president for signature or veto, do not have the force of law.

The Senate is scheduled to vote later Thursday on a measure aimed at 'curbing Trump's war powers on Iran,' according to CNN.

This is the second time the House has voted to limit the president's ability to continue the war against Iran, but the first since the collapse of the memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran.

Gradual support for limiting Trump's powers

Democrats have repeatedly pushed for votes on measures to limit Trump's powers in both the House and Senate, but the campaign is gradually gaining more Republican support, indicating growing frustration within the party over the continuation of the conflict.

Some Democrats supporting efforts to restrict war powers argue that concurrent resolutions are still legally binding, maintaining that the courts have not yet determined whether they lack legal effect when used in matters related to war powers.

On June 4, the House passed a resolution limiting Trump's powers on the war against Iran, which received support from 215 House members, while 208 voted against it.

The resolution is largely symbolic, as it relies on legally controversial powers under the War Powers Act to limit military operations led by the president.

Divisions among Republican lawmakers over the Iran war are escalating, with months separating them from the midterm elections. While Democrats hope to achieve a 'blue wave,' Republicans are making efforts to curb it.
