Former German striker Miroslav Klose revealed details of a phone call with Argentine star Lionel Messi, after the latter equaled his historic record for most goals scored in the World Cup.

The 'Tango' captain did not just equal or break Klose's historic record; he surpassed it by 5 goals, raising his tally to 21 goals, thanks to the goal he scored against Egypt in the round of 16 on Tuesday.

The French newspaper L'Equipe reported that Klose revealed the call with Messi during his appearance on a special show for the German club Nuremberg, which he has been coaching for two years.

Klose said: 'Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni was my teammate at Lazio, and we are still in constant contact. He arranged the call between me and Messi, and it was very moving.'

He added: 'Of course we met several times on the pitch, and the encounters were always full of respect, but that was the first time we talked at such length away from matches.'

He continued: 'He told me he would send me a signed shirt from him.'
