Hossam Hassan Excludes 'Most Expensive Player' from Egypt vs Iran Match
Egypt coach Hossam Hassan plans several changes to the lineup for the World Cup qualifier against Iran, including benching Omar Marmoush.
Reports have indicated that Egypt coach Hossam Hassan intends to make several adjustments to the national team lineup against Iran in the match set to kick off at 6 a.m. Cairo and Saudi time on Saturday, as part of Group 7 in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Hassan kept the starting lineup unchanged for the matches against Belgium and New Zealand, but he will be forced to make a compulsory change after Hamdy Fathy's injury against New Zealand.
The changes will not be limited to the center-back position; the veteran coach plans to extend them across all three lines of the pitch.
According to YALLAKORA, Hassan will introduce a new midfielder, Mahmoud Saber, and will rest one of the holding midfielders, Marwan Attia or Mohanad Lasheen.
Saber, a Zed FC player known for his attacking runs and long-range shots, adds an offensive boost to the team seeking victory to ensure top spot in the group.
The same source confirmed that Omar Marmoush, the Manchester City player, will start the match on the bench, while the attack will include Mustafa Abdel Raouf 'Ziko', Mohamed Salah, and Mahmoud Hassan 'Trezeguet'.
Marmoush, the Manchester City striker with the highest market value among Egyptian national team players—estimated at €50 million according to Transfermarkt—has not delivered the expected performance in the Pharaohs' matches against Belgium and New Zealand.
The Pharaohs top Group 7 of the World Cup qualifiers with 4 points, followed by Iran and Belgium with 2 points each, and New Zealand bottom with 1 point.
A win or a draw will secure Egypt's official qualification to the Round of 16.
