New Zealand actor Sam Neill died suddenly on Monday at the age of 78, just months after announcing he had fully recovered from blood cancer, according to a statement from his family posted on his official Instagram account.

The family said Neill's death was "sudden and unexpected," while confirming that he had recovered from cancer before his death. They added that the actor died in the Australian city of Sydney, expressing gratitude to the private hospital that cared for him in his final days.

Neill, who gained worldwide fame for portraying Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park film series, had revealed last April that he was fully cured of stage three blood cancer after undergoing treatment over the previous period.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese mourned the late actor, praising his courage during his illness. In a social media post, he said: "With his sarcastic and calm style, Sam faced illness with the same dignity, sense of humor, and conviction that characterized his artistic performance." He added: "We will miss him greatly and he will remain in memory for many years. Rest in peace."

Sam Neill is considered one of New Zealand's most prominent actors on the global stage. His career spanned more than five decades, during which he participated in dozens of films and television series. He achieved his greatest fame portraying paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park series, before returning to the role in Jurassic World Dominion in 2022.

His notable works also include the films The Piano, The Hunt for Red October, Event Horizon, and The Horse Whisperer, as well as prominent television roles including Peaky Blinders.

In 2023, Neill revealed he had blood cancer, and later announced he had entered remission after receiving treatment, before confirming in April 2026 that he had fully recovered. Throughout his career, he garnered many awards and nominations, and is considered one of the key figures who helped bring New Zealand cinema to a global audience.
