Occupancy rates at North Coast hotels in Egypt have risen with the start of the summer holiday season, and accommodation prices have increased at varying rates, but the region is witnessing a boom in incoming tourism from Europe.

Hanan Wafky, General Manager of the Caroles Borivage Matrouh Hotel, said occupancy levels at city hotels have risen to 90%, with foreigners accounting for about 85% and Egyptians about 15%.

She told Al Arabiya Business that price levels at Matrouh hotels range between $300 and $400 on an all-inclusive basis, which is 10% higher than last season despite rising operating costs, as hotels seek to attract foreigners and Egyptians.

Growth in charter flights to the region

A source at the Egyptian Hotel Chamber said that Matrouh Airport receives between 15 and 20 charter flights per week, with each plane carrying 195 passengers, while the number of flights arriving at El Alamein Airport has risen to more than 57 charter flights per week from European countries.

He added, "We have flights from some foreign countries that were not present during last season, such as Poland and Russia, reflecting the influx of Eastern European countries to Egyptian North Coast resorts."

He added that the region currently suffers from a shortage of hotels, especially three- and four-star categories, with the current capacity on the North Coast at about 5,000 rooms, creating strong demand for tourist units such as villas and chalets and price disparity.

Soaring prices of tourist units

The source pointed to a 10% year-on-year increase in accommodation prices at hotels and tourist units in Matrouh city, including villas and chalets, amid inflows of Egyptians and foreigners, and expects them to rise further in mid-August, the peak of the summer tourism season on the North Coast.

Hisham Idris, a member of the Egyptian Chamber of Tourism Companies and Travel Agencies, told Al Arabiya Business that current demand levels for vacations on the Egyptian North Coast are growing by more than 15%, with expectations of inflows to El Alamein city rising by over 20% compared to last season due to the completion and improvement of infrastructure in the North Coast region over time.

Idris added that prices of tourist units, including villas and chalets, range between $4,000 and $6,000 per night, with some unique tourist units exceeding 750,000 Egyptian pounds per night.

Prices of package tours from Germany to Egypt rose by 5.2% in the first half of 2026 compared to the same period last year, recording the largest increase among major foreign tourist destinations, according to data released by the Federal Statistical Office on Monday.

The data showed that airfare prices rose by an average of 8.5% in the first six months of the year compared to the same period last year. In contrast, the increase in package tour prices was smaller, with trips abroad rising by 3%, while prices for domestic tours in Germany increased by 2.8%.
