Overseas trips from Japan are expected to decline 8.8% this year to 2.17 million trips during the summer holiday season, marking the first annual decline since the economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic in 2023, according to major travel company JTB.
JTB said the decline in overseas trips this year is due to the impact of the weak yen and rising costs.
The company's forecast for the period from July 15 to August 31 indicates that rising costs are pushing holidaymakers away from distant destinations such as North America and Australia, according to German news agency dpa.
In contrast, domestic travel in Japan may also face difficulties, as individuals become more cautious about spending due to inflation.
Average individual spending on overseas travel per trip is expected to rise 6.3% to 323,000 yen ($2,000).
