"Mal" tracks by names and numbers: 781.7 thousand cars recalled due to technical defects in 2015, and "Toyota" accounts for 54% of them

A survey conducted by 'Mal' revealed that car agencies in Saudi Arabia recalled more than 781,700 vehicles during the past year 2015 due to manufacturing defects or technical faults from the origin, to carry out modifications and free maintenance. The recalls included new cars with model year 2016, while the oldest model recalled was from 2001. According to the survey, which was based on the Ministry of Commerce website for last year, vehicles from Abdul Latif Jameel, the Toyota agent in Saudi Arabia, had the lion's share without dispute, with more than 422,000 vehicles recalled, representing 54% of all recalled vehicles. It was followed by a large gap by Abdullah Hashim Limited, the Honda agent, with recalled vehicles accounting for 13% of the total recalled in 2015, with 98,300 Honda vehicles recalled. Then Al Jomaih Universal Agencies, the Chevrolet agent, with 12% or about 94,000 vehicles. The United Motors Company, the Dodge agent in Saudi Arabia, ranked fourth among the highest recalled agencies with 4%, with 32,600 vehicles recalled. Then 3% each for Al-Jazirah Agencies, the Ford agent, and Abdul Latif Jameel, the Daihatsu agent, with 26,600 vehicles for the former and 23,700 for the latter. Other companies followed with lower percentages, including agents of famous cars such as Porsche, Audi, BMW, Bentley, and Aston Martin, but their numbers were less than a thousand vehicles, and the factor here may be sales volumes compared to other cars. On his part, Turki bin Abdullah Al-Tuaimi, Advisor to the Minister of Commerce and Industry and General Supervisor of Marketing and Communication at the ministry, confirmed to 'Mal' the ministry's keenness to follow up and continuously announce recalled vehicles to raise consumer awareness and demand for their rights, noting that car agencies have begun to respond to this awareness at a high rate out of concern for passenger safety. According to the survey, last December was the month with the most recalls, as the Toyota agent recalled 235,737 vehicles, representing about 59% of what the agency recalled in all of 2015, all due to a defect in the window switch assembly on the driver's door that could cause a short circuit inside the assembly. Of these, 100,548 were for the Camry model years 2007–2011, and a total of 72,210 for the Corolla model years 2009–2011, with the rest for other models. 'Mal' sought to contact Abdul Latif Jameel, the Toyota agent, given that it was the most recalled agency in terms of vehicle volume, and the company confirmed that the recall always comes from the manufacturer. And just as Toyota was the highest in numbers of recalled vehicles, Chevrolet had the highest number of recall campaigns with 31 recalls out of 221 total recalls for all companies during 2015. The causes of faults varied and were similar among several companies, the most common being defects in airbags, defects in programming of the vehicle steering control unit, electrical circuit defects, brake system issues, and many other reasons. Besides faults that cause material losses from repairs for issues not caused by the vehicle owner, there are human losses for occupants if these faults are not notified and repaired quickly. Here, the Advisor to the Minister of Commerce and Industry stressed that the ministry does not allow negligence in this regard, stating that if the ministry confirms any negligence in the progress of these recalls, it will spare no effort to correct it and take legal actions directly against companies violating the agencies system.
