Solar Energy Became the Largest Source of Electricity in the European Union in June
An analysis by the Ember energy research center showed on Tuesday that solar energy became the largest single source of electricity generation in the European Union last month; it generated about 25 percent of the Union's total electricity output during the month.
The Ember research center stated that the share of solar energy in electricity production in the Union states in June exceeded the share of nuclear energy, which reached 21 percent of the Union's total electricity output, natural gas at 15 percent, wind power at 14 percent, hydropower at 12 percent, and coal at 8 percent.
This is only the third time that solar energy has topped the list of electricity generation sources in the European Union, after May (May) 2026 and June 2025.
This record reflects the rapid growth of solar energy projects in the European Union, which consists of 27 countries, over the past five years; solar energy accounted for only 10 percent of the Union's electricity generation in June 2021.
Germany also recorded a record level for the share of solar energy in its electricity generation over the past two months; it produced 33 percent of total electricity generation in May, then 36 percent in June, according to the Ember center's report.
The center indicated that the increase in solar energy production coincided with a relative increase in electricity demand during May and June, due to increased demand for operating air conditioning and cooling devices amid abnormal heatwaves that hit large areas of Europe during the two months.
It added that solar energy helped stabilize electricity supplies, as the use of other energy sources reached their maximum limits due to hot weather conditions and weak wind strength.
