Belgian coach Hugo Broos (74 years old) left his post as coach of South Africa after the 2026 World Cup, where 'Bafana Bafana' reached the round of 16, according to a local football association official who spoke to AFP on Friday.

The source said: 'Hugo can continue working with the national team, but in a different role,' adding, 'We have received many applications for the national coach position, and Pitso (Mosimane) is one of them.'

Broos announced his departure to the Belgian magazine 'Homo', explaining that South African Football Association president Danny Jordaan wants to keep him 'in another role, as an advisor or similar.' Under Broos, South Africa qualified for the first time in its history to the knockout stages of the World Cup, after finishing second behind Mexico in the group stage, thanks to a 1-0 win over South Korea. But their journey ended in the round of 16 after a 1-0 loss to Canada.

The Belgian coach, who took over in 2021, also led 'Bafana Bafana' to third place in the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations.

Pitso Mosimane is among the top candidates to succeed him, having previous experience in this position between 2010, after the end of the World Cup in South Africa, and 2012, without achieving great success. Since then, he has coached Mamelodi Sundowns (2012-2020) and Egypt's Al Ahly, with whom he won the CAF Champions League three times.
