Spanish Prime Minister to Attend World Cup Final Despite Tensions with Trump
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and US President Donald Trump will meet again at the World Cup football final on Sunday, amid ongoing tensions between the two leaders over defense spending and the war with Iran.
The Spanish Prime Minister's office said Friday that Sanchez would be in New Jersey to attend the match, where Trump may ultimately hand over the trophy to the Spanish team, which will face Argentina.
Trump has repeatedly criticized Spain for the government's refusal to commit to the NATO target of spending 5% of GDP on defense, and has issued many threats of retaliatory trade measures.
The latest came earlier this month during the NATO summit in Ankara when Trump asked his advisers to 'cut all commercial relations with Spain, including visits.'
But the US president later softened his tone, saying Spain had complied with the payment request and was 'very generous,' a statement interpreted by Sanchez's government as an indication of 'Madrid's compliance with the agreed defense spending target of 2% of GDP.'
Sanchez, who also angered the Trump administration earlier this year by refusing to allow the use of Spanish military bases and airspace during the US war on Iran, said at the time that his country seeks to establish the best possible relations with its allies.
He added that the two leaders had an informal and friendly conversation during the summit limited to topics including the World Cup.
The Spanish Prime Minister has traveled to the United States multiple times during his tenure, with most visits for United Nations General Assembly meetings in New York. He visited Washington in 2023 for bilateral meetings with former US President Joe Biden.
The Spanish royal family, including King Felipe, Queen Letizia, and their daughters Princess Leonor and Princess Sofia, also confirmed their attendance at the final match.
