Trump announces 25% tariff increase on cars imported from European Union
President Trump announced a 25% tariff increase on European Union vehicles entering the US, citing non-compliance with trade agreements, while exempting American-made vehicles.
US President Donald Trump announced on Friday, May 1, that he will increase tariffs on the European Union for cars and trucks entering the United States.
The US president said the duties will rise by 25%.
But he added, regarding the tariffs, "If cars and trucks are produced inside America, there will be no tariffs."
Trump said in a post on Truth Social that the decision is based on the EU "not fully complying with the agreed trade agreement," adding that "the tariffs will be imposed on European cars and trucks entering the United States."
He continued, "Vehicles produced in factories within the United States will not be subject to any tariffs."
The announcement is a direct threat to a trade deal reached between Washington and Brussels in July 2025, which stipulated a US tariff rate of 15% on imports from the European Union, including cars, spare parts, medicines, and semiconductors, with separate tariffs remaining on steel, aluminum, and copper.
