Uber Technologies has offered to acquire German food delivery company Delivery Hero at 41.50 euros per share, in a deal that would bolster the ride-hailing giant's ability to compete with its rival DoorDash outside the United States.

The U.S. company said it signed an agreement with Delivery Hero, which is based in Berlin and in which Dutch investment firm Prosus, listed in Amsterdam, holds a significant stake.

The deal comes at a time when the food delivery sector is experiencing a wave of global consolidation, driven by slowing growth and intensifying competition. European competitors of Delivery Hero have seen similar acquisition deals, with DoorDash agreeing last year to buy British company Deliveroo, while Prosus acquired Just Eat Takeaway.com.

Uber, which is based in San Francisco, is seeking to expand its international presence through external acquisitions, while its competitors, led by DoorDash, are moving in the same direction. The international reach of Delivery Hero is expected to give Uber a stronger foothold in markets where DoorDash's European unit, Wolt, excels.

Delivery Hero had begun a strategic review of its business following pressure from shareholders, including hedge fund Aspex Management, which succeeded in ousting founder Niklas Östberg and pushed for the sale of more assets.
