Venezuela: Death toll from two earthquakes rises to 4,333 people
The President of the National Assembly (Parliament) of Venezuela, Jorge Rodriguez, said on Saturday that the death toll from the two earthquakes that hit the country on June 24 has risen to 4,333 people, noting that the distribution of housing to those affected will begin in a few days.
Rodriguez added in statements to journalists that the identities of 315 of the victims have not yet been identified. Meanwhile, the official count of injured remained unchanged at 16,740 people, while 6,462 people have been rescued, and about 17,000 remain homeless.
Rodriguez mentioned that interim President Delcy Rodriguez will allocate the first batch of housing, amounting to 200 units, to those affected next week, without providing further details.
He explained that 856 buildings were damaged, including 190 that completely collapsed or suffered structural failure.
Initial government estimates indicate the need for 25,000 homes. Authorities have already identified about 40 plots of land with a total area of approximately 584,000 square meters for housing projects in the 'Osma' and 'Chuspa' areas.
Rodriguez confirmed that search operations continue, saying: 'As long as there is life, there is hope. We still have one or two sites where the picture is not yet clear, and they are active sites where we continue to search for survivors.'
The international community mobilized to help Venezuela deal with the disaster. Authorities said the South American, oil-rich country received support from 30 countries, including 1,000 tons of supplies, more than 3,600 rescue and support workers, and 118 search and rescue dogs.
