CNN reports that a single camel in America can be worth $27,000! That's the market value at which the Amish sell them. Renting one for a month, to a zoo or event, approaches $1,350!

CNN told a fascinating story about a Saudi named Walid Abdulwahab who met an Amish man in America who had many camels imported from Australia. The Amish are a conservative Christian group with beliefs that may seem strange, such as banning modern technology like electricity, cars, and cell phones. If you enter one of their scattered communities in rural America, your memory goes back a thousand years. At the same time, most Amish are wealthy, due to their excellence in farming, carpentry, and livestock breeding, yet they have no consumer appetite as many of us do.

A partnership began between this Saudi young man and the Amish to sell camel milk in large quantities. The Amish produce the milk, and the Saudi handles marketing and supply chain.

CNN explains the high price of camel milk: FARE, an organization specializing in providing dietary solutions for people with allergies to certain products, says camel milk is among the top 8 best-selling products because it is a great alternative for those allergic to cow milk! Not only that, CNN adds, another reason for the soaring demand for camel milk is that 36% of the American population over age 10 has lactose intolerance, meaning they cannot digest the sugar in cow milk.

So from a purely economic perspective: it's a supply and demand equation. There is huge demand, not matched by supply, which explains why camel milk has literally become the most expensive milk in the world.

There are alternatives to cow milk emerging, but they don't compare to the amazing health benefits confirmed by many scientific studies in camel milk. Lori Chong, a registered dietitian at Ohio State University, says: The numbers are increasing for those seeking healthy and natural alternatives, and camel milk is the most important. Jason Widener, owner of an organic grocery chain in America, told CNN that demand for camel milk is rising.

When I first heard about this Saudi's story, and I was at the end of my PhD in America, I packed my bags and went to the largest camel farm in America, which controls about 85% of the camel milk market in the US. I documented the entire farm in a video that spread like wildfire at the time. This man turned his farm into a tourist attraction, where people drive long distances to see the camels!
