"Doha Design District" launches open call for public art to shape the future of the creative scene

Doha, April 14 (QNA) - Doha Design District, the creative destination in Msheireb Downtown Doha, has launched an open call for public art, inviting artists, designers, and creatives to submit proposals for innovative public artworks, both indoor and outdoor, that align with the nature and artistic mission of the location.

This initiative contributes to establishing art as a fundamental element in public spaces, thereby enhancing the quality of daily urban life, consolidating the district's identity, enriching the overall visitor experience, and supporting the creative scene by integrating art into key urban spaces. The aim is to enhance its distinctive character and elevate the sense of place, while celebrating cultural expression by highlighting local narratives and Qatari identity, alongside encouraging regional and international dialogue.

The initiative enhances public interaction by providing opportunities for meaningful daily engagement with art, thereby fostering a sense of shared belonging, as well as enabling creative collaboration and opening new horizons for artists and multidisciplinary professionals.

In addition, the initiative focuses on sustainability by calling for works that are sustainable and in harmony with the character of the place, thereby achieving long-term added value.

Dana Kazich, Director of Doha Design District, said: "Public art plays a transformative role in shaping how people interact with and connect to a place. Through this open call, we invite creatives to contribute to the evolving identity of Doha Design District, reaffirming our commitment to supporting artistic innovation and strengthening Doha's position as a vibrant and globally connected cultural hub."

Registration for the initiative is open until May 14, and the competition welcomes a wide range of participants, including urban designers, architects, landscape architects, artists, design specialists, creatives working in public spaces, as well as community organizations and multidisciplinary art teams.

Emerging professionals and students may also apply to the competition, provided they have support from a mentor or an institutional entity.

Proposals must be submitted across a variety of categories, including sculptural landmarks and gateways, functional and interactive installations, educational and community spaces, as well as murals and other artworks related to surface artistic interventions.

All proposals are submitted digitally via the Doha Design District website, in Arabic or English, and must include a visual presentation board, a project description of no more than 1,000 words explaining the idea, sustainability approach, spatial adaptability, materials used, as well as applicant information.

Individuals or teams may submit more than one proposal, and applicants may attach optional supporting materials. Please refer to the official website for full submission guidelines and detailed requirements.

Entries will be evaluated by a specialized jury based on a set of key criteria, including originality and artistic vision, and responsiveness to the urban and cultural context of the site.
