Golden Pen Salon: A Meeting Place for Literary Figures and Intellectuals - Badr Abdul Karim Al-Saeed
Literature is the artistic expression of human emotions and ideas through refined linguistic styles. Poetry and prose are the two pillars of Arabic literature. Poetry is metered and rhymed speech, considered the Arabs' register and their primary means of immortalizing history and emotions. Prose is free speech not bound by meter, encompassing oratory, novels, plays, and essays. A literary figure is a creative individual with high skill in crafting literary works (such as poetry, prose, novels, and theater). This title is also given to those who possess noble morals and intellectuals deeply versed in the sciences and arts of the Arabic language. Cultural councils and salons in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia are periodic literary gatherings (weekly or monthly) held in the homes of writers and thinkers to discuss cultural and intellectual issues and honor creatives. Human nature tends toward gathering and companionship, so the idea of literary salons emerged since ancient times, strengthening community relations among intellectuals, youth, and different generations, and contributing to supporting and refining young talents and discovering inspiring figures in society. They also provide an open dialogue space for discussion and exchange of knowledge on societal, intellectual, and cultural issues, highlighting them through various media (print, audio, visual). His Excellency the poet and advisor Turki bin Abdulmohsen Al Al-Sheikh – may God guide him – Chairman of the Board of Directors of the General Entertainment Authority, announced the establishment and launch of the 'Golden Pen Salon,' which has made prominent contributions to enriching and supporting cultural life, hosting literary competitions, discovering talents, and honoring creatives in various Arab countries. The Golden Pen Award for the Most Influential Literature competition is a distinguished initiative to support and motivate salon patrons and creatives, support literary production, and convert written texts into cinematic works. The salon also features several unique elements, most notably:
A permanent 'Book Fair' with a focus on specialized books in teaching writing, a 'Library' containing scripts of famous films and internationally best-selling novels. It provides an opportunity for Saudi publishing houses to display their publications and celebrate writers' book signings, along with publishing books and periodicals and celebrating members' achievements. A 'Writer's Retreat,' a quiet space dedicated to completing literary works, and a 'Reading Seclusion' designed to deepen the reading experience, along with halls equipped with modern sound and lighting systems, 'Organizing national events and celebrating international days.'
This comprehensive literary salon, the 'Golden Pen Salon,' aligns closely with the goals of the Kingdom's Vision 2030, which makes culture a fundamental pillar of sustainable development, contributing to building a knowledgeably vibrant society by encouraging literary creativity and innovation, and enhancing the Kingdom's position as an Arab and international center for culture and thought. The meeting of writers and intellectuals in one space allows for deep exchange of experiences and perspectives, creating what researchers call a 'communication field' that contributes to crystallizing new visions and partnership opportunities across different disciplines.
Words from a patriotic poem by His Excellency the poet and advisor Turki Al Al-Sheikh:
She is our home, and we are her people Saudi Arabia, a land of goodness and peace Home of glory, its heart embraced us Land of glories, of high status Enamored, all of us in her love Whoever loves you, my country, is not to blame And O our King, proceed to heights And O Crown Prince, we are your sword
