Behind the Scenes of Dangerous and Fun Shows in the World's Circus Capital in America
Sarasota is the arts and culture capital of the U.S. state of Florida. Artists from around the world come to present their shows and celebrate the rich legacy of circus arts.
Since the circus "Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey" made the coastal city its winter headquarters in 1927, it has continued to thrive as a center for circus arts.
In an interview with CNN, Jennifer Lemmer Posey, curator of the circus department at the Tibbals Collection of the Ringling Museum, said: 'You never know, when you're walking down the street or talking to someone in a restaurant, that that person might have once been shot out of a cannon.'
Posey added: 'In 1927, John Ringling moved the winter headquarters of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus to Sarasota from Bridgeport, Connecticut, thus relocating the residence center for circus employees' families to the state of Florida. Since then, about 100 years ago, Sarasota has become the center from which circus troupes launch.'
Posey explained that the circus is truly aimed at children of all ages and a space that gives people a chance to feel joy, wonder at what humans can achieve, laugh, and have fun.
