Associate Professor of the Faculty of Preventive Medicine at Pacific Medical University Dr. Olga Yamileva warned against excessive consumption of red watermelon, stressing that it may cause complications for patients with kidney disease and diabetes. She explained that red watermelon has a diuretic effect, which may put additional strain on the urinary system of kidney patients, especially those prone to fluid retention (edema), and may also cause kidney stones to move in patients who have them if consumed in large quantities. She added that watermelon contains simple sugars that are quickly absorbed and has a high glycemic index, which could cause a sudden spike in blood sugar levels, requiring caution for diabetics. The doctor advised diabetic patients not to exceed 150 to 200 grams of red watermelon per serving, and to consult a doctor and monitor blood glucose levels before including it in their diet.
