Double Lung Transplant and Beating Cancer: Omar Hashim Inspires Millions with Unbreakable Will
The journey of Saudi youth Omar Hashim was not merely a struggle with illness, but the story of a person who decided to turn every crisis into a new beginning, and every setback into a step toward success. Between two lung transplants, a rare cancer, chemotherapy sessions, and the failure of the transplanted lung, he never ceased to believe that life is not measured by the number of years, but by the impact one makes while living.
In an interview with the program “MBC in a Week,” Omar revisited the milestones of his profound journey, noting that doctors initially told him he needed a lung transplant within six to nine months, or else he would not survive. He said: “After surpassing five years, I was not content with merely staying alive; I decided to live life and embrace it with all my senses.”
A Rare Disease and the Second Case in the Kingdom
At first, Omar did not realize the severity of the disease he was facing; he was on an ambulance stretcher asking paramedics for painkillers so he could return to his university and continue his studies, while they were trying to convince him that his condition was far more serious than he imagined.
He explained that his illness is among the rarest medical conditions, affecting one in every 10 million people, and it was the second case recorded in Saudi Arabia. He underwent his first lung transplant in 2016, while insisting on continuing his studies until he completed them.
From Searching for Breath to Achieving on Global Platforms
Omar was not content with being merely a survivor of the disease; he transformed from a young man seeking a breath to sustain his life into an athlete participating in international tournaments, carrying a message that organ transplantation is not the end of the road, but the beginning of a new life.
Throughout this journey, he achieved remarkable accomplishments: he earned both a bachelor's and a master's degree, founded his own company, helped break three Guinness World Records, and won 14 international medals.
His Mother: Pillar of the Journey and Hope for a Miracle
Behind this journey stood his mother, Dr. Luna Al-Yafi, steadfastly by his side at every stage. She describes the moment she was told her son needed a lung transplant as a harsh shock, yet she clung to hope and always believed that God could work a miracle. She was present at every step, giving him strength whenever hardships intensified.
Cancer: The Challenge After Survival
Omar's ordeal with pain did not end with the lung transplant; two years after the surgery, he developed lymphoma, a complication of the immunosuppressive drugs taken by organ transplant patients. Doctors put him through chemotherapy, which spanned between six and eight sessions, but the resulting low immunity ultimately led to the failure of the transplanted lung again.
Despite the harshness of the experience, Omar asserts that this time he knew how to fight, having learned over the previous years never to give up no matter how tough conditions became. Today, his story is a message of hope for every patient and a living testimony that willpower can grant a person a new life, and that the greatest victories may begin from the most difficult moments.
