King Abdullah Medical City has launched a new qualitative project at the Heart Health Center, represented by the implementation of the CardioMEMS system, one of the latest internationally approved technologies for remote monitoring of heart failure patients.

This step enhances the shift towards smart and proactive healthcare, and contributes to improving patients' quality of life and reducing disease complications.

The system relies on advanced technology to continuously measure pulmonary artery pressure, enabling the medical team to detect early indicators of worsening heart failure and fluid retention days or even weeks before clinical symptoms appear, which allows for early therapeutic intervention and proactive adjustment of the treatment plan, thereby reducing the need for hospitalization and improving treatment outcomes.

The technology targets patients classified in the second and third categories

The medical team noted that the technology targets patients classified in the second and third categories of heart failure according to the American Heart Association (AHA) classification, as this category benefits most from continuous monitoring to avoid deterioration of health status.

The system consists of an extremely small wireless sensor permanently implanted inside the pulmonary artery via a simple right heart catheterization procedure, without the need for batteries or wires, in addition to a new-generation smart home device that allows the patient to take daily measurements easily from home by lying down for a few minutes on a dedicated pillow that reads the data and transmits it wirelessly.

The readings are securely transmitted to a cloud-based electronic platform that enables the medical team to monitor pulmonary artery pressure indicators daily through graphs and precise analyses, allowing adjustment of diuretic doses or other heart failure medications as needed, without waiting for symptoms to appear or needing to visit the clinic each time.
