Medical Integration in Asir Saves Newborn Aged 18 Hours from Rare Heart Defect
A joint medical team at Khamis Mushait Maternity and Children's Hospital, in collaboration with Prince Faisal bin Khalid Heart Center in the Asir region, succeeded in saving the life of a newborn baby aged only 18 hours, who was suffering from a rare critical condition known as D-Transposition of the Great Arteries (D-TGA) accompanied by a limited atrial septal defect—one of the most severe congenital heart defects requiring urgent intervention.
The hospital received the baby transferred from Balasmar General Hospital in a critical and unstable condition that did not allow transfer to specialized centers outside the region. The medical team performed an urgent and successful Balloon Atrial Septostomy, through precise specialized coordination between neonatologists and interventional cardiologists.
The medical team that performed the procedure included Dr. Mohammed Asiri, consultant neonatologist, and Dr. Hassan Al Zaid, consultant pediatric cardiologist from Khamis Mushait Maternity and Children's Hospital, along with Dr. Khaled Al Nuhaili and Dr. Sami Al Ahmary from Prince Faisal bin Khalid Heart Center.
After the baby's condition stabilized, he was transferred to King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center in Riyadh to complete the treatment plan, where a successful Arterial Switch Operation was performed. He is currently in stable health condition.
This medical achievement embodies the effectiveness of the integration model between healthcare levels in the region and its ability to ensure that the patient receives appropriate surgical intervention at the right time, positively reflecting on treatment outcomes and patients' quality of life.
