A psychological framework indicates that learning requires information to pass through several biological filters. First, a person notices an event, creating a transient sensory memory. If the person focuses their attention, that information enters working memory, which acts as a limited temporary memory. But if they keep shifting their attention to new stimuli, previous thoughts fade before being copied into long-term memory. Researchers Meiting Wei and Guang-Heng Dong from Yunnan Normal University in China suspected that the frantic pace of video clips on social media would disrupt this chain of events. In collaboration with colleagues, they designed a series of three studies to test whether short videos are effective as educational tools, thereby understanding the brain's ability to handle and process these videos in a healthy and correct manner.
"The brain does not form memories": To ensure the integrity of the test, the researchers first had to precisely match the video materials. They selected a long documentary about travel destinations and extracted a 10-minute clip from it. For the short video, they divided the relevant footage into five to seven short clips to simulate the rhythm of social media posts. Then they inserted non-informational filler footage between these clips, such as silent drone aerial shots of landscapes. This procedure ensured that the number of spoken words and total factual information remained identical in both experiments.
In the first experiment, 180 university students participated in what cognitive psychologists call an incidental learning task. The students thought they were taking a relaxing break to watch travel videos, and had no idea they would be tested. So immediately after the 10 minutes ended, the researchers surprised the participants with a short test, then conducted a surprise follow-up test the next day. Individuals who watched the fragmented short videos scored lower on the immediate test compared to those who watched the continuous documentary. This performance gap indicated that the rapid switching between short clips prevented the brain from forming strong initial memories, even when the underlying factual information was identical in both clips.
"Physical brain activity": Subsequently, the second experiment was conducted with a new group of 185 students. This time, the study involved a deliberate learning task: the researchers explicitly told the students to focus well because they would be evaluated on the material later. Despite conscious effort, the performance of students in the short-video group was worse on the immediate test. The follow-up test the next day revealed a greater cost of this fragmented style. Students who studied the short clips with focus forgot a much higher proportion of their initial information overnight compared to students who watched the continuous video. Thus, exerting more effort in focusing on short videos was not enough to overcome the cognitive difficulties imposed by the very style itself.
