The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) warned against abruptly stopping certain medications, stressing that this may lead to withdrawal symptoms as the body becomes accustomed to using them for certain periods.

The authority recommended consulting a doctor before discontinuing treatment, noting that some medications require a gradual dose reduction under specialist medical supervision.

The SFDA stated that the most prominent medications whose abrupt discontinuation may be associated with withdrawal symptoms include antidepressants, antiepileptics, sedatives and hypnotics, some painkillers, beta-blockers, corticosteroids, and antipsychotics.

It indicated that withdrawal symptoms may include headache of varying degrees, dizziness or feeling unsteady, anxiety or irritability, fatigue or general weakness, sleep disturbances, tremors, as well as changes in appetite.

The SFDA emphasized the importance of not stopping any medication without consulting a doctor or pharmacist, to ensure patient safety and avoid any potential health complications.
