Many people resort to increasing their water intake or following a liquid-only diet, believing that it accelerates weight loss, but experts emphasize that this idea is not accurate, and that water, despite its importance for health, is not a magic method for getting rid of fat.

In this regard, Dr. Jay Chourdia, consultant endocrinologist at Paras Health Hospital in Udaipur, India, explained that drinking adequate amounts of water supports weight control, but it does not alone lead to significant weight loss.

He said that drinking water before meals may increase the feeling of fullness, which helps reduce caloric intake, and that replacing sugary drinks with water reduces excess calories that lead to weight gain.

He added that good hydration supports digestion, metabolism, and improves physical performance, factors that contribute to maintaining a healthy weight, but they do not replace the need for a balanced diet and physical activity.

Excessive water intake causes complications

The doctor warned against the belief that drinking a lot of water is always beneficial, explaining that body needs vary from person to person, as some people may feel hydrated after drinking just a few cups, while others need larger amounts.

He pointed out that excessive water intake can lead to what is known as 'water intoxication,' a condition that can cause serious health complications, including headache, nausea, muscle weakness, and diarrhea.

What is the correct way to lose weight?

The Indian doctor affirmed that sustainable weight loss depends on a set of factors, including: following a balanced diet, engaging in regular physical activity, getting adequate sleep, and diagnosing and treating any hormonal disorders or metabolic issues, such as thyroid disorders or insulin resistance.

He added that people who have difficulty losing weight despite following a healthy lifestyle should consult a doctor for a comprehensive medical evaluation to identify any health conditions that may hinder weight loss.

There is no magic recipe

The doctor concluded by emphasizing that weight loss should be gradual and sustainable to maintain results, noting that no single drink can burn fat or melt belly fat, and that the best results are achieved through a combination of healthy nutrition, physical activity, and proper hydration, under the supervision of a specialist when needed.
