Without surgical incision and within 9 minutes

Thermal ablation technique ends suffering of young man with bone tumor in thigh at Dr. Sulaiman Al Habib Hospital in Al-Fayhaa, Jeddah

An advanced procedure ended a young man's continuous suffering lasting 9 months from the effects of a tumor in the upper right thigh bone, with an advanced medical intervention that took only 9 minutes, using microwave thermal ablation guided by CT scan. This was stated by Dr. Fadi Tunis, consultant interventional radiologist and head of the medical team.

He said the patient came to the hospital complaining of a set of severe symptoms he had been experiencing for months, most notably pain in the upper right lower limb, in addition to limping and difficulty in performing motor activities. Upon arrival, he underwent a physical examination, then CT scan, MRI, and X-rays. The results showed a benign tumor in the upper right thigh bone. The case was studied and it was concluded that traditional surgery is not suitable for such tumors, so the case was referred to the interventional radiology clinic. After reviewing the medical test results, the data confirmed that microwave thermal ablation is the optimal method for dealing with the tumor. After making the necessary arrangements, a thin needle was inserted under CT guidance to reach the tumor area, then the microwave was activated to ablate the tumor. The procedure was performed without surgical incision and ended in a very short time not exceeding 9 minutes, and it was, praise be to God, a complete success. The patient left the same day in good health.

Dr. Tunis added that the patient returned to the hospital for follow-up about 10 days after the procedure, and medical tests confirmed its success, as he got rid of all symptoms and returned to his normal life. He confirmed that he resumed horse riding, which he had stopped the day after the procedure.

Dr. Fadi concluded his statement by saying that the interventional radiology clinic at the hospital has all advanced capabilities that enable it to provide its services for the treatment of many diseases according to international standards, as it includes qualified and experienced medical staff and is equipped with advanced diagnostic imaging devices such as CT, ultrasound, and catheterization devices, in addition to radiofrequency ablation and arterial and venous catheters.
