UK Government Bans Sale of Energy Drinks to Under-16s
The British government said today it will ban the sale of high-caffeine energy drinks to under-16s in England starting from next April, stating that the move aims to protect children's health and well-being.
The government clarified that the ban will cover drinks containing more than 150 milligrams of caffeine per liter, subject to parliamentary approval, and will apply to sales in shops, vending machines, and online.
The British government said around 100,000 children in England consume these drinks daily, citing evidence linking them to sleep disorders, anxiety, and poor concentration.
The energy drink ban is part of a series of measures adopted by the government of outgoing British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to reduce risks faced by children and teenagers.
Britain also plans to ban social media for under-16s and impose a virtual ban on nighttime social media use for those aged 16 and 17, saying these restrictions will improve young people's health, sleep, and well-being.
