According to Baptist Health, neurologist Dr. Gediminas Glebus explained that dehydration directly affects brain function, occurring when the body loses more fluids than it takes in. Even mild dehydration can lead to a decrease in blood volume, which reduces the efficiency of oxygen and nutrient delivery to brain cells.
He noted that water plays a vital role in supporting blood flow, transporting nutrients, and regulating body temperature—all essential factors for maintaining normal brain function.
Blood flow is crucial as it carries oxygen and glucose, the primary energy sources upon which billions of nerve cells rely. When hydration levels drop, these processes become less efficient, which can impact thinking, focus, and memory.
Research also indicates that chronic dehydration may contribute to cognitive decline over time, especially in the elderly, who often experience a diminished sense of thirst as they age.
Glebus emphasized that water should remain the primary beverage for maintaining brain health, even if coffee or tea provide a temporary feeling of alertness.

Nevertheless, coffee remains one of the most studied beverages in relation to its effects on brain health.
Glebus explained that consuming coffee in moderate amounts can improve alertness, attention, response speed, and the ability to focus for short periods.
This is due to caffeine, which stimulates the central nervous system by blocking adenosine, a brain chemical that builds up during the day and causes drowsiness. When caffeine inhibits its effect, a person feels more energetic and attentive.
This effect results in better focus, faster decision-making, and improved performance during complex mental tasks, though these benefits are temporary and do not necessarily protect the brain from long-term cognitive decline.
Studies link coffee to a lower risk of dementia.
A large-scale study published last February, following more than 130,000 people over many years, showed that those who drank two to three cups of caffeinated coffee daily were less likely to develop dementia and performed better on cognitive tests compared to non-coffee drinkers.
The study noted that this association was observed with caffeinated coffee, whereas it was not seen in those who consumed decaffeinated coffee.

Glebus stressed that excessive caffeine intake can lead to side effects such as nervousness, anxiety, heart palpitations, and sleep disturbances, and may even contribute to dehydration if coffee replaces water consumption.
He added that sleep disturbances deserve special attention because deep sleep is essential for memory consolidation and clearing metabolic waste from the brain, while chronic sleep deprivation is linked to poor memory, reduced attention, and an increased risk of dementia.
According to health recommendations, most healthy adults can consume up to 400 milligrams of caffeine per day, which is approximately four cups of brewed coffee, though tolerance varies from person to person, especially among pregnant women or those with heart conditions, anxiety, or sleep disorders.

Glebus concluded by emphasizing that maintaining brain health does not depend on a single drink, but on a combination of healthy habits, including drinking enough water, getting quality sleep, exercising regularly, and following a balanced diet like the Mediterranean diet, which is rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fish, and healthy fats.
Furthermore, managing blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol, along with staying mentally and socially active, helps reduce the risk of dementia and neurological diseases as one ages, reinforcing that coffee can be a helpful factor but is not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle.
