Don't Say 'I Swear by Divorce' or 'I Swear by Forbidden'
Don't say 'I swear by divorce' or 'I swear by forbidden'
People in our society are accustomed to hearing the phrases 'I swear by divorce' and 'I swear by forbidden', and those who utter them have become accustomed to them as well. This, by God, is a sign of weak intellect and weak faith, and unfortunately they have become acceptable to some. They are sometimes used as an oath to get a gift or justify a stance, and often they are sworn during gatherings to ensure one's request is fulfilled, forcing the guest to agree. This causes embarrassment and humiliation for the guest. If he agrees unwillingly due to an excuse or having other commitments, but after this oath he is compelled to agree, then this is not chivalry or good manners to force the guest to agree. The person who swore by 'I swear by divorce' or 'I swear by forbidden' thinks he has proven to his guest that he is strong-willed and hospitable, and if the guest refuses his request, he fears that divorce has occurred. Unfortunately, if they knew the religious ruling on this oath, they would not utter it. And if they know the ruling and do not hesitate to swear by it, then this is a great sin. Therefore, it is my duty as a writer to point out the seriousness of this act. What is the fault of the wife if divorce occurs after this oath, and she continues with the divorced husband (and this is undoubtedly forbidden, and having children after the divorce is also forbidden)? The divorce has indeed occurred, and it requires seeking a fatwa from scholars to confirm. It is preferable to officially stop this wrong behavior with a deterrent punishment. Just as violating public taste has a penalty, it would be preferable to have a penalty for those who tamper with God's boundaries. Unfortunately, this behavior is inherited and some community leaders find it acceptable and do not denounce it, and they promote it on social media. Also, the phrase 'I swear by forbidden' is enough to be prohibited by God in His wise Book, as He says: 'O Prophet, why do you prohibit what God has made lawful for you, seeking the approval of your wives? And God is Forgiving and Merciful. God has already ordained for you the dissolution of your oaths.' [At-Tahrim: 1-2].
