Saudi foreign minister, regional counterparts condemn Iranian aggression
Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan held telephone conversations with his counterparts from Gulf Cooperation Council nations and Jordan to discuss pressing developments in the Middle East.
The diplomatic engagement follows the intensification of hostilities between Iran and the United States, which resumed last week.
During the calls, Prince Faisal and the foreign ministers of Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, and Jordan condemned Iranian aggression against regional states and rejected any actions that could threaten their sovereignty or compromise the security and stability of the Middle East, the Saudi Press Agency reported.
Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, Jordan, as well as Kuwait and the UAE, have all been targeted by Iranian missiles and drones as the conflict between Tehran and the US resumed last week.
Except for Jordan, all of these countries, including Saudi Arabia, are separated from Iran by the Persian Gulf and lie close to the Strait of Hormuz, which has been frequently blocked since the start of the Iran war in February.
In a separate conversation, Prince Faisal discussed the Eastern European conflict with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, as Russia's military campaign in Ukraine enters its fifth year with a diplomatic stalemate.
Saudi Arabia and its Gulf neighbors have frequently been targets of Iranian missile and drone attacks due to their proximity to Iran and the strategic Strait of Hormuz. The current conflict, which began in February, has led to repeated blockades of the strait, disrupting global oil supplies. Meanwhile, Riyadh’s outreach to Kyiv reflects its growing role in international diplomacy amid overlapping crises.
