Cultural / 'Arabic Terminology'.. Symposium in Asir Discusses Relationship Between Everyday Language and Cultural Identity
Abha, Muharram 20, 1448 AH corresponding to July 5, 2026, SPA – A symposium titled 'Arabic Terminology: An Evolving Identity' discussed the transformations occurring in the Arabic language in daily use and their impact on shaping the linguistic and cultural identity of generations, as part of the summer cultural activities in the Asir region. The symposium was organized by the Cooperative Association of Heritage Villages in the Namar Governorate in partnership with the Asir Development Authority, with the participation of a number of academics and specialists who emphasized that the identity of the language is built on the vocabulary and terms people use in their daily lives, not on the number of words in dictionaries. The symposium addressed the relationship between translation and Arabization, and the impact of the digital revolution on the spread of foreign vocabulary, especially terms used on social media platforms. Participants stressed that the real challenge is not the entry of foreign words into the Arabic language, but rather the decline in pride in the language and cultural belonging among some generations, calling for the consolidation of Arabic's status in daily life and enhancing its presence in education, media, and the digital space. The symposium concluded that preserving linguistic identity requires a national vision and supportive policies that promote the use of the Arabic language and strengthen the new generations' connection to it as a vessel for culture, identity, and civilizational belonging. // End // 14:36 TEM 0076
