Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and US President Donald Trump discussed talks between Washington and Tehran, and stressed the importance of navigation safety and maritime passages in the region.

This came during a phone call from Trump to Mohammed bin Salman, according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) on Saturday.

The agency said: 'During the call, they reviewed cooperation ties between the Kingdom and the United States and ways to support them in several fields, and discussed a number of regional and international issues and exchanged views on them.'

It added that the call addressed current developments in the region, including talks between the United States and Iran.

It continued: 'They stressed the importance of navigation safety and maritime passages, and support for everything that contributes to achieving security and stability in the region.'

This comes amid rising tensions between Washington and Tehran, as the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Thursday that it had carried out strikes targeting about 90 Iranian military sites, including air defense systems, missile and drone warehouses, naval capabilities, and logistical infrastructure on the Iranian coast.

In response, Iran's Revolutionary Guard announced targeting US military bases in Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan, warning of expanding its attacks if the US strikes continue.

The Gulf region has been witnessing escalating tensions since the start of the US-Israeli war on Iran on February 28 of last year.

Since Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding on June 18 of last year, negotiations between them have continued with mediation by Qatar and Pakistan to reach a final agreement.
