Saudi Arabia Demands Accountability for Perpetrators of Sexual Violence in Conflict Zones at UN Security Council
Saudi Arabia's permanent representative to the UN calls for ending impunity for sexual violence in armed conflicts, emphasizing international law and the need to protect civilians.
The Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the United Nations in New York, Dr. Abdulaziz bin Mohammed Al-Wasil, participated in a session of the UN Security Council dedicated to discussing the issue of sexual violence in areas of armed conflict.
In the Kingdom's statement before the Council, Al-Wasil affirmed that sexual violence in conflict zones represents a direct threat to international peace and security, stressing the need to hold perpetrators accountable and end impunity.
The Saudi envoy highlighted the importance of full compliance with the provisions of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions, and the necessity of protecting civilians and ensuring unhindered access to humanitarian aid, praising the humanitarian role of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief) in supporting those affected by conflicts, including victims of sexual violence, in coordination with relevant international organizations.
Dr. Al-Wasil noted that violations committed in the Palestinian territories, including crimes of sexual violence, constitute a grave violation of international law, calling for urgent international action to protect civilians and hold those responsible for these crimes accountable.
He concluded his statement by affirming that protecting civilians from sexual violence is a shared legal and moral responsibility that requires enhancing international cooperation and an effective response to the suffering of victims.
