Saudi National Mathematics Team Heads to Shanghai to Participate in the 2026 International Mathematical Olympiad
The Saudi national mathematics team has left the Kingdom heading to Shanghai, People's Republic of China, to participate in the 67th edition of the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO 2026), which will be held from July 10 to 21, 2026, with the participation of students representing more than 100 countries around the world.
The Saudi team in this edition consists of 6 high school students, who were prepared and qualified under the supervision of the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity "Mawhiba", in partnership with the Ministry of Education, within the Mawhiba International Olympiads Program.
The students underwent a comprehensive training path, starting from the National Olympiad for Science and Mathematics "Nasmo", through a number of specialized training forums and programs, reaching an intensive training stage that lasted nearly two months under the supervision of an elite group of local and international experts. The qualification stages included successive nomination and evaluation tests, which helped select the best and most prepared students, after training them in advanced mathematical skills, analytical and creative thinking methods, and strategies for solving complex problems.
The International Mathematical Olympiad consists of two tests held over two days, during which students answer 6 mathematical problems, at a rate of 3 problems per day, within 4.5 hours per test. The competition topics include advanced branches of mathematics, including geometry, algebra, combinatorics, and number theory, and require high abilities in deep thinking, analysis, reasoning, and creativity.
This participation comes as an extension of the efforts of "Mawhiba" and the Ministry of Education in discovering, nurturing, and qualifying talented students to compete in global scientific forums, and enhancing the Kingdom's presence in the fields of science, knowledge, and innovation, in line with the goals of Vision 2030.
It is worth noting that the International Mathematical Olympiad is the oldest and most prominent global competition in mathematics for high school students, as its first edition was launched in 1959 in Romania with the participation of 7 countries. The Kingdom's first participation in it was in 2003 in Japan as a scientific observer, before it participated with four students in the 2004 edition in Greece, and has since continued its regular presence in this international scientific competition.
