The National Center for Waste Management 'Mowan' has set five technical criteria for classifying materials as waste, including lack of validity, market value, and posing an environmental risk, with the aim of regulating the sector and protecting public health.

The center explained that the approved cases for classifying materials include the lack of validity for direct use, or the impossibility of benefiting from them after treatment. It stated that this classification also applies to materials whose production is not targeted.

'Mowan' added that the criteria also include materials that lose their market value or become a financial burden on their producers. It pointed to the inclusion of materials that pose a risk to the environment and public health in the waste list.

The center confirmed that these determinants are based on the executive regulations for the waste management sector. It noted that their application contributes to raising management efficiency and achieving regulatory compliance for entities and individuals. It mentioned that these regulations support the sustainability and circular economy goals in the Kingdom. It emphasized their role in reducing negative impacts resulting from random practices in dealing with waste. It stated that this enhances awareness of the requirements and contributes to applying best environmental practices.
