Algerian authorities announced Thursday the death of 11 people and injury of 19 others in a fire that broke out at an orphanage in the municipality of Mohammadia, east of the capital Algiers.

This was stated in a statement by the General Directorate of Civil Protection (Civil Defense), which indicated that the response to the fire is still ongoing, without the causes of the fire being clear.

The statement said the fire resulted, in an initial toll, in 11 deaths, in addition to 19 injured.

It explained that among the injured are "10 people who suffered burns of varying severity, two cases suffering from shortness and difficulty in breathing, as well as 7 people who suffered psychological shock."

Earlier Thursday, the Algerian Civil Defense announced that it was dealing with a fire that broke out at the 'Dar al-Aytam' orphanage for assisted childhood (all inmates under 18 years old) in the municipality of Mohammadia.
