New $10.6 million seized in Iraq corruption case
The investigating judge of the Central Anti-Corruption Criminal Court in Iraq, Diaa Jaafar, announced on Thursday the seizure of $10.6 million in the case of the Deputy Minister of Oil for Refining Affairs, the detained defendant Adnan Al-Jumeili, and the parties involved with him.
Jaafar said in a statement that the relevant authorities were able to seize the financial proceeds resulting from the waste in projects implemented by the defendant and the parties in the case, which were hidden in a pit prepared for rainwater drainage, stressing that investigations and the pursuit of other implicated individuals are ongoing until all legal procedures are completed.
According to data from the Iraqi Judicial Council, the total seized funds rose after today's haul to about $131 million, in addition to real estate, vehicles that were confiscated, and gold jewelry.
It is noteworthy that Al-Jumeili was arrested more than a month ago on corruption charges, and his confessions led to the arrest of a number of Iraqi MPs and senior officials on corruption charges, as well as the seizure and confiscation of large amounts of money, gold jewelry, vehicles, and real estate.
