(CNN)-- Iran accused the United States of fabricating a pretext of a nuclear site in the Mount Axe area in order to launch an attack on it, following US President Donald Trump's statements about attacking the alleged underground nuclear site.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ismail Baghaei said in a post on platform X on Wednesday: 'Washington's excessive focus on Mount Axe, where no nuclear activities are taking place, is nothing but a fabricated pretext for aggression, destruction, and sabotage.'

Trump stated on Tuesday that the United States would strike Mount Axe 'very soon,' adding, 'There's nothing they (Iran) can do about it.'

In his post on platform X, Baghaei questioned why the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency did not respond to Trump's threat.

"Mount Axe" is a highly fortified facility located deep underground in the center of the country, about one mile south of the Natanz uranium enrichment facility - which has previously been bombed by the United States and Israel - making the site a difficult target for the United States and Israel, as well as for any potential ground operation.

The facility is located at a depth of at least 100 meters (328 feet) under a large mountain called 'Kuh-e Kolang Ghazi,' where 'Kolang' means 'ax' in Persian, according to data from the Institute for Science and International Security.

Construction of this facility began in 2020; at that time, Iran informed the United Nations' International Atomic Energy Agency that the site was intended for future assembly of centrifuges used in nuclear fuel production.
