Germany proposes replacing UN mission with EU forces in Lebanon
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has suggested replacing the soon-to-expire UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon with an EU-mandated force, he told Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland.
“We should examine in the EU whether we can ensure that no security vacuum arises with a European mandate following the UNIFIL mission,” Wadephul said in an interview published today.
The UNIFIL mission expires on December 31, 2026.
An EU-mandated force could “create the conditions for the Israeli army to withdraw without Hezbollah returning with its terror,” the minister added.

Strikes kill 8 Iranian Kurdish fighters in Iraq
An official from the Kurdistan Workers’ Association of Iran in Sulaymaniyah has announced that at least eight Iranian Kurdish fighters have been killed in an attack on Iraq, according to a report by the Rudaw Media Network.

Lebanese gov’t ‘taking country to very dangerous place’, says Hezbollah MP
Ali Fayyad, a senior Hezbollah member of parliament in Lebanon, has attacked the Lebanese delegation negotiating with Israel, saying Beirut is continuing negotiations “as if nothing has happened”, referring to Israel’s occupation of southern Lebanon.
“It seems clear that this authority has abandoned its people, and it is indifferent to their suffering and the extent of the crimes committed against them by the Israelis,” Fayyad said in a statement quoted by the country’s National News Agency.

Closure of Bab al-Mandeb could have ‘tremendous impact’ on the global economy
Reporting from Tehran, Iran
So far, the Iranians have not confirmed that the Houthis will shut the Bab al-Mandeb Strait.
However, we know there is a line of communication between the Houthis and Iranians. They are allies, and the Iranians are saying any decision regarding the strait is going to be made by the Houthis.
But the Iranians are also saying that “if our critical infrastructure, civilian infrastructure, energy and power plants are attacked, then we are also going to respond in kind.” Iran and its non-state allies in the region are going to be more involved in that.
In this equation, the role of the Houthis is critical, because, especially now that the Strait of Hormuz is closed, any closure of Bab al-Mandeb is going to have a tremendous impact on the global economy.

Just three vessels crossed Strait of Hormuz amid closure
Only three commodity vessels crossed the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday, the fewest daily transits since May, according to shipping data.
Most ships halted or made U-turns after recent Iranian attacks on vessels and the resumption of a US blockade on Iran-related shipping.
Miraan, a sanctioned product tanker carrying fuel oil, and Norita, a small vessel carrying liquefied petroleum gas, exited the strait on Thursday via the Iranian route but stopped at the Gulf of Oman, where the US blockade is, Kpler data showed as of 05:13 GMT on Friday.
Arolia, a bunkering tanker laden with Iraqi fuel oil that is used to refuel vessels at sea, made a U-turn to head back into the Gulf hours after it exited earlier on Friday, LSEG data showed.

EXPLAINER
How would the closure of the Bab al-Mandeb affect world trade?
Iran has threatened it could prod its Houthi allies in Yemen to close the Bab al-Mandeb Strait at the mouth of the Red Sea if the US continues attacking Tehran’s infrastructure.
The Bab al-Mandeb Strait connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and is a crucial waterway for global oil trade. Its importance has increased since Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20 percent of the world’s oil and gas is shipped in peacetime.
If the Bab al-Mandeb were also to be closed, it would impact more than the ongoing war – it could compound the global energy supply crisis caused by the conflict, deepening the economic turmoil being felt in factories, kitchens and at petrol stations around the world.

The continued strikes threaten to disrupt global oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint. Iran's refusal to return to pre-war status signals a prolonged confrontation. The EU's potential involvement in Lebanon reflects broader international concerns about stability in the region.
