The governor of Iran's Konarak County, Hamad Younes Haqqani, announced on Thursday evening that two explosions occurred as a result of an airstrike on a military area belonging to the naval forces in the county, located in Sistan and Baluchestan province (southeast).
The official Iranian news agency quoted Haqqani as saying that "the military area belonging to the naval forces in Konarak, overlooking the Gulf of Oman in Sistan and Baluchestan province, was attacked by enemy fighter jets in two stages on Thursday evening."
He added that relevant agencies, medical teams, and security forces immediately headed to the scene, and that an investigation into the details and dimensions of the attack is currently underway.
Haqqani called on citizens to remain calm and to rely only on official media sources for updates on the attack, and not to spread rumors or unconfirmed news.
This comes as Washington had not announced carrying out attacks on Iran by 20:50 GMT on Thursday evening.
However, these developments come amid ongoing military escalation between the United States and Iran over the past two days.
On Thursday morning, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced carrying out new strikes targeting about 90 Iranian military sites, including air defense systems, missile and drone storage locations, and naval capabilities and logistics infrastructure on the Iranian coast.
In response, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced targeting US military bases in Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan, warning of expanding the scope of its attacks if the US strikes continue.
The Gulf region has been witnessing escalating tensions since the outbreak of the US-Israeli military confrontation with Iran on February 28, despite Washington and Tehran signing a memorandum of understanding on June 18, and the continuation of negotiations between them mediated by Qatar and Pakistan to reach a final agreement.
