Pakistan's aviation authorities said a cargo plane belonging to K2 Airways, with five crew members on board, lost contact with air traffic control on Tuesday night after reporting a navigation system problem during its flight from Sharjah to Karachi, prompting search and rescue operations, according to Reuters news agency.

The Civil Aviation Authority announced that the plane was lost off the coast of Karachi.

The Civil Aviation Authority said in a post on X that search and rescue operations are underway in the Arabian Sea. The cause of the plane's disappearance was not immediately known.

It said the aircraft, a Boeing 737, belonged to K2 Airways, based in Karachi, and was on a cargo flight from Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates to Karachi when it reported a navigation system problem at 9:18 p.m. local time.

It added that radar data showed the plane descending rapidly and making a sharp change in direction at around 9:21 p.m. before losing radar and radio contact

about 155 nautical miles (287 kilometers, 178 miles) west of Karachi.
