Saudi Arabia and Canada on Thursday condemned Iranian attacks on merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz, and the two countries affirmed that these unacceptable attacks are an assault on the security and safety of international navigation, on the security of global energy supplies, and constitute a grave violation of international law and norms.
In a joint statement following a meeting between Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at Al-Salam Palace in Jeddah, the two countries pointed out that "these acts would escalate regional tensions, undermine confidence-building efforts, as well as threaten ongoing diplomatic negotiations aimed at enhancing security and stability in the region," and praised the efforts made by Pakistan and Qatar aimed at reaching an agreement, according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
They stressed the importance of restoring safe and unrestricted navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, in accordance with international law, and returning it to the normal status it had before February 28.
On the Palestinian issue, the two sides stressed the importance of delivering humanitarian aid safely, urgently and without obstacles, protecting civilians, and making efforts to create the necessary conditions for achieving lasting peace. The two sides renewed their support for the two-state solution, stressed the importance of preserving the right of the Palestinian people to establish their independent state, and the Saudi side welcomed Canada's recognition of the State of Palestine.

The two sides stressed the importance of maintaining security and stability in the Red Sea region.
