"Trump" threatens Iran with strong strikes tonight: confrontation may last 3 weeks
US President Donald Trump stated that Washington will launch strong military strikes against Iran on Monday evening and Tuesday morning, in a notable escalation revealing a new phase in the confrontation between the two countries.
Trump's threats come at a time when US-Iranian relations are experiencing acute tension over Iran's nuclear program and its regional role.
Trump explained, in a phone interview with the 'Hugh Hewitt' program, that 'the memorandum of understanding with Iran was a test and Tehran did not respect it,' noting that military operations may last between two and three weeks.
The US president affirmed that his country will ultimately prevail, either through negotiations or military option, without clarifying whether the ceasefire has effectively ended.
Trump reiterated his firm stance that "Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon," but showed limited flexibility by saying that "Tehran can keep some missiles as other countries do."
Trump also accused Iran of killing 42,000 protesters, in reference to the crackdown on Iranian protesters.
Regarding the relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump described it as "very good," adding: "I disagree with him sometimes and I tell him that directly."
The latest statements represent a dramatic escalation that could push the region toward a wide-scale military confrontation. Furthermore, Trump's accusation of Iran killing 42,000 protesters further complicates the diplomatic landscape, while his relationship with Netanyahu remains good despite public differences.
