70,000 Police Secure France and Spain
French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez announced Sunday the deployment of 70,000 police and gendarmes across the country on Tuesday to secure the clash between France and Spain in the 2026 World Cup semi-finals. He explained in an interview with BFMTV that these security personnel will be deployed in the morning and evening throughout France, coinciding with the national holiday and the highly anticipated match. When asked about the security setup in Paris, Nunez confirmed that 5,000 police and gendarmes will work from 10:00 a.m. local time to secure the military parade for the celebrations on the Champs-Élysées. Nunez noted that the World Cup quarter-final between France and Morocco last Thursday, which ended 2-0, went relatively smoothly, adding: "We recorded some incidents leading to 89 arrests, and we witnessed the tragic death of a 17-year-old girl in a terrible accident. We stress zero tolerance for any disturbances on Tuesday." France, runner-up of the 2022 World Cup, will face Spain in the semi-final on Tuesday evening, while Argentina, the defending champion, meets England in the other semi-final, with the winners facing off in the 2026 World Cup final.
