Football Federation General Assembly: Criticism, Objection, and Handover Date Announced
Yasser Al-Mishal, the resigned president of the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF), objected to the 'inappropriate' phrase used by Sulaiman Al-Hatlan, the representative of Al-Hilal Club, during the extraordinary general assembly held remotely via video conference on Wednesday afternoon, according to a special source from Al-Riyadiya. The same source explained that the Al-Hilal representative criticized the remote meeting procedure, which involved using chat and muting audio during voting, calling for discussions and hand-raising to allow time for debate, as in previous in-person meetings. The source added that Al-Mishal, who began the assembly by announcing his resignation, responded to Al-Hatlan, saying: 'In FIFA and AFC meetings held via video conference, the same procedure is followed, and there are many requests for interventions. Colleagues contacted you immediately, and you had a substantive observation and conveyed it to them. This is generous of you, and our main goal as the board is to provide opportunity and open elections early. We are not seeking a substantive amendment to the bylaws.' The extraordinary general assembly of the football federation commenced at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, with members representing clubs being called; 46 members participated, while representatives of Al-Shabab, Al-Riyadh, and Mahayel clubs were absent. Voting took place on the agenda as well as the new amendments to the bylaws and elections, with 42 members in favor, three abstentions, and one against. The meeting was monitored by three independent observers: Hisham Qassim, CEO of the Saudi Basketball Federation; Ali Al-Shahri, CEO of the Saudi Chess Federation; and Khaled Al-Saad, CEO of the Saudi Squash Federation. Al-Hatlan, the Al-Hilal representative, proposed that voting on amendments in future meetings be done 'in detail' for each paragraph or text, for example, 'Al-Hilal Club approves seven amendments but objects to a specific amendment,' noting that it is wrong to vote on all amendments at once. This prompted Al-Mishal to respond to the representative of the capital's Blue Club, reiterating that in FIFA and AFC meetings held via video conference, the same procedure is followed, and there are many requests for interventions. Al-Mishal said: 'Colleagues contacted you immediately, and you had a substantive observation and conveyed it to them. This is generous of you. Our main goal as the board is to open elections early. We are not seeking a substantive amendment to the bylaws.' The Al-Hilal representative called for holding a workshop for members before any amendments to the bylaws or national teams, a move supported by Talal Al-Ablan, the representative of Al-Hazm Club. Al-Mishal responded: 'Thank you. Perhaps we were remiss, frankly. We expected the amendments to be somewhat straightforward, and no workshop was held. We promise you from now that in the next general assembly, if there are amendments, a workshop will be held, and no amendments will be accepted before a workshop is held with members. It is our right over you.' The assembly saw an intervention by Portuguese José Semedo, CEO of Al-Nassr Club, who thanked Al-Mishal on his own behalf and on behalf of Al-Nassr for all they had done for Saudi football, wishing him success in the future. The extraordinary general assembly also saw an intervention by Khaled Al-Ghamdi, president of Al-Ahli Club, who addressed Al-Mishal: 'Thank you for everything you have done. Any work is hoped to yield good results, but the results are in God's knowledge. This does not negate the effort made or the intentions we have seen. Personally, over three seasons, and due to Al-Ahli's external participations—God has granted us success—I found full cooperation from you and from all federation members in every small and large matter.' Al-Mishal concluded his intervention by apologizing for not explaining the amendment articles due to time constraints, but said they were simple articles and the approval of over 90 percent indicates clarity. He revealed that he will remain until the end of the elections in late August and complete the handover procedures.
