The presence of African teams in the World Cup is no longer limited to competing and reaching the knockout stages, but has extended to imposing a new reality in the tournament's historical records.

In the current edition, held across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, Africa achieved an unprecedented collective milestone in its history, reflecting the significant development of African football.

According to Opta data, "African teams raised their tally to 51 goals in the 2026 World Cup, becoming the second continent in the tournament's history to have its teams score 50 or more goals in a single edition of the World Cup."

This figure comes after the achievement of the Moroccan national team tonight with a 3-0 victory over Canada (the host) and qualification to the quarter-finals for the second consecutive time.

This feat has only been achieved before by UEFA, whose teams have reached this number in 21 different World Cup editions.

The African teams put in a remarkable performance in the current World Cup, as 9 out of 10 teams advanced past the group stage: Morocco, Egypt, Algeria, South Africa, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Ghana, DR Congo, and Cape Verde. Tunisia was the only one eliminated in the first round.

Seven African teams saw their journey end in the round of 32, leaving only Egypt, who will face Argentina in the round of 16, and Morocco, who advanced tonight to the quarter-finals.
