According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, contacts between the two clubs have begun to discuss the possibility of completing the deal, despite Ounahi's recent move to Girona after catching attention with his performances for the Moroccan national team in the 2026 World Cup. Ajax considers the "Atlas Lions" player among its top priorities this summer, given the conviction of the sports management and coaching staff of his technical abilities and his capacity to add value to the midfield. Romano explained that Ounahi's contract with Girona includes a release clause worth 25 million euros, but Ajax is trying to reach an agreement that allows the deal to be completed for an amount slightly below the clause value, while negotiations continue among all parties. Ounahi enjoys strong support from Ajax's new head coach, Miguel Ángel Sánchez Muñoz, who previously worked with the player at Girona and considers him the first choice to bolster the midfield for the upcoming season. Ajax's interest in signing Ounahi comes after his outstanding performances with the Moroccan national team in the World Cup, along with Girona's relegation to the Spanish second division, which increased the likelihood of the player leaving during the current summer transfer window. If negotiations succeed, Ounahi will experience his first stint in the Dutch league, in a deal that could be among the most notable transfers of Moroccan players in the summer market.
