Al-Turais Meets with Secretary General... A Message Reducing 'Foreign' Referees
The Saudi Football Federation is studying a regulatory proposal that sets a ceiling on the number of matches per club in which they can request foreign referees during the next season of the Saudi Roshn League, with the aim of expanding opportunities for Saudi referees to officiate major and high-profile matches. According to a source from Al-Riyadiya, the proposal will be presented to the new federation board before its official approval. The same source revealed that FIFA informed the Saudi Federation, through an oral message, that the absence of assignments for referee Khaled Al-Turais as a center referee in the 2026 World Cup is primarily due to his lack of officiating big matches in the local league, considering that one of the most prominent criteria used by the International Referees Committee in distributing assignments. The source indicated that Al-Turais met on Sunday with Majid Al-Saheb, the acting Secretary General of the Saudi Federation, in the presence of Swiss Manuel Navarro, head of the Referees Committee, and he was directly conveyed the message of Italian Pierluigi Collina, head of the FIFA Referees Committee. The source explained that seven referees out of 15 referees listed in the countries that have only one referee outside the lists of countries with three referees were not assigned to officiate any match as center referees in the World Cup, and Al-Turais was one of them. He only served as the fourth official in seven matches, before returning to Riyadh on Sunday. The source mentioned that the FIFA Referees Committee praised Al-Turais's potential and abilities, confirming that he will receive a detailed technical report on his performance after the World Cup ends, but his chances of obtaining international assignments as a center referee in the future will remain limited unless he is given greater opportunities to lead strong and influential matches in the Saudi League. It is worth noting that Roshn League clubs have been allowed to use an 'unlimited number' of foreign referees since 2021.
