Al Ain announced on Sunday their signing of Greek striker Georgios Giakoumakis, from Mexican club Cruz Azul. Al Ain, the UAE league champions, did not disclose details of the contract with the 31-year-old Giakoumakis, who was the top scorer in the Scottish Premiership with Celtic in the 2021-2022 season, and in the Dutch Eredivisie with VVV-Venlo in the 2020-2021 season. Giakoumakis said in comments quoted by Al Ain's account on 'X' platform: 'I am happy to join Al Zaeem, and I promise the fans that I will give my best for them.' Giakoumakis, who has had spells with Atlanta United and AEK Athens, spent last season on loan from Cruz Azul to PAOK, scoring 15 goals in 36 matches in all competitions. The signing of Giakoumakis, who has scored four goals in 22 international appearances for Greece, comes days after the departure of top scorer Kodjo Laba from the Emirati team.
