Alan Shearer: It's a matter of time before Cristiano Ronaldo coaches Portugal
It seems that the final chapter in Cristiano Ronaldo's career has already begun to be written. After Portugal's disappointing exit from the 2026 World Cup and the 'Don' reaching his 41st year, attention turns to what comes after retirement.
Alan Shearer, Premier League legend, told Betfair, as reported by The Sun: 'It's a tough decision. We're talking about a giant in the football world who has broken all kinds of records, and I admire his dedication, his playing style, and his constant desire to continue.'
He explained: 'But it's difficult. As I said before the tournament, I think the way Martinez handles Ronaldo, whether by starting him or substituting him, will determine Portugal's fate in this World Cup.'
Shearer added: 'He only took him off in one match, right? Ramos came on and scored a goal, but he didn't take him off against Spain when they desperately needed a goal. I thought he should have taken him off, changed the plan, and brought on another player. Any other Portuguese striker would also face this problem, whoever replaces him, if Ronaldo doesn't retire.'
He continued: 'He's now 41 years old. I wouldn't rule it out, but I would be surprised if he continues playing for the national team after two years. You know, I always withdraw from the scene while the audience demands more, and it seemed that this tournament was too much for him and for Portugal.'
Regarding his coaching future, Shearer affirmed: 'I don't know what his plans are after retirement, but I think if he wants to coach the Portugal national team in the future, it's only a matter of time before he gets the position.'
